Overview
Bradley completes Richards’s escape setup in Manchester, giving him a way to mail his tapes through Boston while hiding under the identity of Ogden Grassner. Their parting underscores Bradley’s political anger and solidarity with the poor, while Richards’s exhaustion shows how dependent he has become on others to survive.
The chapter leaves Richards temporarily installed at the Winthrop House, but with only uncertain safety, a future Portland contact, and Bradley’s grim expectation that capture is still likely.
Summary
Bradley drives Richards across Manchester and gives him the final details of the new hiding arrangement. Richards has a suitcase in the trunk containing gummed mailing labels that will make his packages look as if they come from Brickhill Manufacturing Company in Manchester. Bradley instructs Richards to send his required tapes to Bradley by Speed Delivery, and Bradley will forward them to the Games from Boston, creating a false trail.
At the Winthrop House, Bradley warns Richards not to drive out of Manchester unless he changes disguises, stressing that Richards must keep adapting. Bradley says the hotel reservation is for the following week, which may or may not keep Richards safe, and points Richards toward a contact in Portland, Maine, who can hide him briefly if needed.
Richards tries to pay Bradley more than the six hundred dollars Bradley asks for, but Bradley refuses the extra money. Richards, exhausted and dependent on Bradley’s planning, asks why Bradley and his people have risked so much. Bradley answers that if the poor do not protect their own, they are already defeated, and he speaks bitterly of a coming violent reckoning against the powerful.
Before leaving, Bradley tells Richards to take some enemies with him when he is caught. Richards retrieves the black satchel from the trunk, takes the cane Bradley gives him, and watches Bradley drive away. Richards then resumes the role of a nearly blind priest, deliberately missing the first step so the doorman will help him into the Winthrop House.
