Overview
Richards and Elton’s attempted escape from Portland becomes a violent running battle with police. Richards is severely injured, but he destroys multiple cruisers and keeps the escape alive through desperate improvisation.
The chapter raises the stakes by leaving Richards physically broken, Elton panicked and hurt, and the authorities still closing in. Richards’s survival now depends less on planning than on endurance, violence, and the damaged air car.
Summary
After Mrs. Parrakis calls the authorities, Ben Richards and Elton Parrakis run downhill toward the park and the hidden air car. A police cruiser spots them, its loudspeaker calling Richards by name, while Elton points out that the car is still ahead under the trees.
The cruiser attacks across the park. Richards turns to fight with Bradley’s pistol, firing at the windshield while the car repeatedly charges him and a passenger fires a Sten gun. Richards dodges the first pass, but the bumper breaks his left ankle on another charge, and a bullet wounds his left arm. When Richards gets a clear shot at the driver, the cruiser rolls and crashes, buying a brief escape.
Richards crawls toward the air car while Elton, panicking, struggles to start it because he has forgotten the safety vents. Sirens converge, but Elton finally gets the car moving and Richards drags himself inside. Two police cars pursue them, and Richards directs Elton to cut through a vacant lot; one cruiser loses control and explodes, while the second continues the chase.
As the route threatens to force them onto the Coast Turnpike, Richards orders Elton into an alley. Elton refuses, fearing a trap, so Richards seizes the wheel and turns the air car himself. The car crashes into trash and brick, breaking Richards’s nose and leaving Elton slumped over the wheel.
Richards, badly injured but still fighting, reloads and waits at the alley mouth. When the remaining cruiser comes around the turn, Richards fires at close range through the windshield, causing it to crash into a brick wall and explode. Knowing more police will come, Richards returns to the wrecked air car, hears Elton groaning for his mother, and crawls underneath to clear debris from the air chambers in a desperate attempt to keep fleeing.
