VII. Relativism — Libby

Six months earlier, Libby confronted Atlas in his office and chose a rational end: she stopped his heart, deciding he was neither god nor villain, just a man whose designs demanded too great a cost. She framed the act as preventing a greater catastrophe, accepting that her hands were already bloodied.

In the present crisis, Libby recognizes Atlas’s influence lingering in their attempt to open a world. Remembering warnings and her own compulsions, she rejects continuing the experiment. From the precipice of creation, she slams the process into reverse, deciding the price of knowledge is too high.

Libby calculates too late that the energy cannot vanish; it must be absorbed by a vessel—one of the two conjurers. Accepting the necessity to “kill one to save everything,” she commits to stopping the act despite the cost. Gideon screams as the collapse hits, and the charged power finds its target.

When the dust settles, Libby trembles and falls. Dalton snarls that she has made herself useless without “him,” exposing his reliance on that conjurer. Libby sees Gideon hunched over, Tristan restraining Dalton, and a body on the ground unnaturally still—someone she had never seen not fidgeting.

With that silent figure lying motionless and the room in shambles, Libby closes her eyes and succumbs to darkness, the group left shattered by her choice to end Atlas’s design and accept its devastating cost.
