VIII. Naturalism — Callum

After Libby departs, Callum assesses the ruined reading room, tasting the emotions of the unconscious figures. He tests Dalton’s turmoil and confirms Parisa’s suffering is ebbing as the hostile wards fade. Spotting Libby’s dropped pistol, he retrieves it and listens to the strange resonance from a sleeping man nearby.

Dalton suddenly wakes, radiating annihilatory rage. Callum fires once. When the sleeper opens his eyes, Callum pivots the gun, but Parisa, regaining consciousness, orders him not to shoot. Callum has already fatally shot Dalton; Parisa sees the hole in Dalton’s chest. She laughs, then breaks down, and the sleeper silently departs.

Parisa and Callum exchange brittle honesty. She admits she would have saved him too, even though she had brought him to kill her if necessary. They consider consequences—dead researcher, dead Caretaker, neutralized telepathic threat—and conclude the house likely won’t pursue them. Parisa leaves; Callum notes a missed call from Reina and texts from Wyn: Adrian’s people have Tristan.

Callum phones Alys, who confirms Tristan is at Adrian’s pub. He races through London, determined to intervene, discarding any pretense of delivering Tristan to Adrian. On the way, he resolves to choose Tristan openly, planning tenderness rather than revenge.

At the pub, Callum forces entry to Adrian’s office. Tristan turns toward him. Before Callum can speak, a sudden impact snaps his head back. In those final moments—having seen Tristan—Callum dies, understanding his choice and finding a fleeting, private certainty.
