VI. Determinism — Interlude

Over years, Alexis weakens from an undetected cancer. Her magic fades, and Atlas Blakely tends to her—baths, books, daily care—while their house drains him more slowly. Alexis, weary of life but not eager for death, urges Atlas, “Don’t waste it.”

Atlas willfully misinterprets her final words as a command to fix the unfixable. Grief hardens into a singular purpose: to remake the world and rewrite endings, even to the point of wishing he had never existed. What had been framed as betterment for Ezra becomes Atlas’s solitary burden and obsession with control.

By then Atlas has located Dalton Ellery, selected by the Society, and recognizes Dalton’s capacity as both powerful and deeply unsettling. Buoyed by prior successes and arrogance, Atlas believes trajectories can be altered. He seizes the chance, treating Dalton as a tool to achieve his vision.

Atlas simultaneously refashions himself—his clothes, voice, and presentation—while Ezra Fowler overlooks the warning signs. Atlas privately faults Ezra, not for past actions, but for failing to kill him; he convinces himself that Atlas Blakely should have died. The closed loop leaves Ezra’s reconciliation moot.

Planting ideas proves easier than enduring grief. Atlas reduces life to one outcome: become as a god, not for glory but to command endings. The narration closes by rejecting Atlas’s exceptionalism, observing that pain and regret are universal and that individual motives—his included—are mere grains beside the ocean of loss.
