Summary
On Monday at Williamson, Starr discovers a mass student walkout organized by Remy to skip class under the guise of protesting Khalil’s death. Hailey reveals her bias by calling Khalil a drug dealer, and Starr rejects both the protest and Hailey’s attitude. As classmates leave chanting, Starr stays, overwhelmed, while Chris remains beside her and Mr. Warren continues the lesson at her request.
Throughout the day, some students explain to Starr that they returned to class after learning the protest’s real motive. At lunch, Jess, Seven, and Layla join Starr in quietly opposing the walkout. After school, Starr, Seven, and Sekani go to Maverick’s store and see a news crew interviewing Mr. Lewis about King Lords attacking officers. On live TV, Mr. Lewis names King as a major dealer and gang leader. A citywide curfew is announced.
Police then arrive and confront Maverick and Mr. Lewis. Recognizing Maverick’s name and Starr’s connection to the shooting, the officers force Maverick face-down and search him before releasing him with a demeaning warning. The community witnesses the incident, and Sekani is shaken. Inside, Tim reveals people saw Starr at the crime scene and now believe she is the witness.
At the register, Kenya questions Starr and calls her a coward for staying silent while the media maligns Khalil, arguing Khalil would have defended Starr publicly. Starr is stung by the truth in Kenya’s words. In the office, Maverick reassures Starr, condemns fear as a trap, and promises full support if she chooses to speak out.
