Overview
At Seven’s graduation birthday barbecue, Starr’s school friends blend with her neighborhood circle, easing her two-world tension. Iesha arrives uninvited, sparking Seven’s raw confrontation about her neglect. Iesha also warns King may retaliate over Starr’s TV remarks. After an emotional fallout, family support restores the celebration.
Summary
On Memorial Day weekend at Uncle Carlos’s barbecue celebrating Seven’s graduation and upcoming eighteenth birthday, Starr enjoys family chaos by the pool with Kenya, DeVante, and the kids. Chris and Maya arrive, and, to Starr’s relief, her Williamson friends mesh with her neighborhood friends, easing Starr’s anxiety about balancing both identities.
Inside jokes and dance-floor line dances bring everyone together. While Starr grabs food, security calls: Iesha, accompanied by her mother and Lyric, is at the gate. Seven agrees to face her. In the driveway, Iesha publicly confronts him for not inviting her.
Seven explodes, listing her neglect and the times she chose King over him, contrasting Iesha with Lisa, who raised him. Iesha, stung, storms off and warns that King intends to “fuck y’all up” for Starr’s TV comments. Maverick challenges the threat, but Starr’s focus shifts to comforting Seven, who breaks down inside.
Kenya grapples with divided loyalties and her mother’s situation; she and Starr acknowledge their shared bond with Seven. Starr restarts the music with a song promising things will be all right, and Seven returns, composed but teary.
The family shifts back to celebration. Maverick delivers a heartfelt tribute to Seven’s perseverance and namesake, and everyone sings as Seven blows out the candles. The day closes on renewed unity despite the lingering danger from King.
