Overview
Starr confronts Hailey and Maya over their protest and simmering racial tensions. A TV interview with Officer One-Fifteen’s father recasts the shooting and hardens Starr’s resolve to speak out. Afterward, Uncle Carlos admits punching the officer, rejects the justification for the shooting, and affirms he wouldn’t have killed Khalil.
Summary
Starr visits Maya’s house and finds Hailey there. The girls try to play video games, but the tension breaks as Starr challenges them about joining a school walkout for Khalil just to skip class. Hailey refuses to apologize and pivots to accuse Starr of calling her racist.
The TV airs an interview with Officer One-Fifteen’s father, who claims the officer feared for his life and suggests Khalil threatened him and had a gun. The montage of Garden Heights stereotypes and the false account devastate Starr and intensify her anger. When Hailey responds with sympathy for the officer’s family and says his life matters too, Starr storms out of the argument.
Starr presses Hailey about unfollowing her Tumblr. Hailey leaves, claiming Starr has changed. Maya then reveals Hailey disliked Starr’s “black stuff” posts and recounts a past racist joke Hailey made to her. Starr regrets staying silent then, and she and Maya agree to call out such behavior together.
Walking back, Starr finds Uncle Carlos drinking on the steps. They discuss the interview; he is on leave and admits he punched Officer One-Fifteen after the officer pointed a gun at Starr. Carlos condemns rationalizations of Khalil’s death, regrets his earlier comments, and says no one should be killed for opening a car door. He assures Starr he would not have shot Khalil, and Starr takes comfort in his support.
