Summary
Early at IHOP, Starr admits to Lisa that the TV interview defending the officer isn’t her main worry; she’s grieving Khalil, feeling guilty after learning from DeVante that Khalil sold to pay his mother’s debt and refused the King Lords, and she’s conflicted about lingering feelings for Khalil while dating Chris. Lisa reassures Starr that grief can amplify emotions and advises her to evaluate her friendship with Hailey by weighing good against bad.
Back home, tension flares between Lisa and Maverick. At the DA’s office, Starr recounts the shooting, but describing the shots and Khalil’s wounds triggers a physical breakdown; she vomits and the interview ends. Outside, Maverick comforts Starr, softening their earlier conflict.
At the store, Maverick questions Starr about Chris and admits fears that her dating a white boy reflects on him; Starr affirms his example as a man. King arrives with gang members, demanding DeVante’s whereabouts and revealing DeVante stole $5,000. King implies Starr’s testimony could endanger those linked to Khalil’s hustle. Maverick stands his ground, and King leaves, effectively threatening Starr if she talks.
Shaken, Maverick closes early and brings dinner home. During a quiet meal, Lisa reveals a second interview for a six-figure Pediatrics Nursing Manager job at Markham Memorial. Motivated by King’s threat, Maverick vows to move the family out of Garden Heights. Lisa and Maverick reconcile.
Afterward, Seven says he’ll attend a local college to support his mother and sisters, signaling his commitment to them even if the Carters move. Starr and Sekani bicker lightly, offering a brief respite from mounting stakes.
