Overview

The Carters tour a suburban house after Lisa secures a better job, signaling a possible move for safety and stability. Family tensions flare when Seven wants to attend a local college for Kenya and Lyric. That night, gunfire and a thrown brick hit their home, intimidating Starr before the grand jury. Maverick enlists rival King Lords for protection, triggering a fierce argument with Uncle Carlos over safety, cops, and family loyalty.

Summary

On Sunday, Lisa and Maverick surprise Starr, Seven, and Sekani with a tour of a modest suburban house in Brook Falls, revealing they hope to buy it. Lisa announces a new nurse manager job that will help finance the move, and Maverick concedes that protecting family matters more than holding to his “hood versus suburbs” stance. The siblings race to claim bedrooms, and the family imagines a safer, more stable life together.

Over lunch, Seven reveals he wants to attend nearby Central Community to stay close to Kenya and Lyric. Maverick rejects the idea of sacrificing opportunities for parental duties that aren’t Seven’s and urges him to choose college for himself. The family later bonds over a Cavaliers game, sharing playful rivalry and stories of Lisa and Maverick’s early days.

Suddenly, glass shatters and gunshots erupt. Maverick rushes out, fires back, and believes he hit a tire as the shooters flee. Inside, the family finds a brick thrown through the front window—an unmistakable threat timed the night before Starr’s grand jury testimony. Neighbors check in, and Uncle Carlos arrives; Maverick refuses to call the police, fearing their involvement, while Carlos insists it be recorded and guarded.

Shaken, Starr declares she won’t testify, fearing both gangs and police. Maverick grounds her resolve by having her recite Black Panther and Malcolm X principles, but her doubts linger. There is a tense knock; Maverick brings in Goon and Cedar Grove King Lords to guard the house and escort them, arguing they oppose King’s set and can protect the family.

Uncle Carlos condemns using gangbangers and offers to accompany Starr if they’re not involved. The dispute explodes as Carlos defends his history of caring for Starr and Seven during Maverick’s incarceration. Stung into silence, Maverick watches Carlos leave. The house remains under guard as the family braces for Starr’s grand jury appearance.
