Overview
As militarized policing heightens tensions, Starr channels her grief into a Tumblr memorial for Khalil and commits to speaking publicly. With Ms. Ofrah representing her, she prepares for a DA grand jury meeting and a possible anonymous TV interview after learning the supposed gun was a hairbrush. Family pressures escalate—Seven is pushed out by Iesha at King’s urging—and DeVante’s urgent call ends the chapter.
Summary
Amid curfew, an armored vehicle rolls through Garden Heights, underscoring the warlike police presence. Inside, the Carter family finds brief comfort in routine. Starr distracts herself with pizza, schoolwork avoidance, and a new anonymous Tumblr, “The Khalil I Know,” sharing personal photos to humanize Khalil as support for him grows online.
She trades texts with Chris, who says “love you,” and she reciprocates. In Seven’s room, Starr delivers her old laptop for DeVante, while Seven reveals Iesha kicked him out at King’s order. Mr. Lewis’s TV denunciation of King goes viral; Maverick arranges for DeVante to help at the barbershop for safety.
The DA’s office requests a meeting with Starr. At Just Us for Justice, Ms. Ofrah explains the grand jury process and reveals the “gun” rumor was a misidentified hairbrush. News that the officer’s father will give a TV interview frustrates Starr, who fears the narrative will skew toward the officer.
Starr discloses witnessing her friend Natasha’s earlier murder, affirming that both Natasha and Khalil mattered. Moved, Ms. Ofrah offers pro bono representation and proposes an anonymous TV interview to ensure Starr’s voice is heard while protecting her identity. As plans form, Maverick gets an urgent call from DeVante, and the family rushes to help.
