Overview

Starr endures an uncomfortable night at Big D’s party, highlighting her split identity between Garden Heights and Williamson. After gunshots, Khalil rushes her to safety. In his car, they confront his family struggles and suspected dealing, and he explains THUG LIFE. Their reunion is cut short by flashing police lights behind them.

Summary

Starr follows Kenya into Big D’s crowded spring break party, feeling out of place amid neighborhood judgments about her Williamson Prep life and her appearance. Kenya fixates on rival Denasia, leaving Starr isolated and self-conscious. Starr’s discomfort underlines her double life: accepted at school, yet needing to earn status in Garden Heights.

Khalil arrives and warmly reconnects with Starr, teasing and reminiscing. He mentions his grandmother’s cancer and his mother’s inconsistent sobriety, hinting he has been “busy,” which Starr recognizes as dealing. Their banter over music and sneakers briefly restores an old ease despite Starr’s concerns.

Arguments on the dance floor escalate; gunshots erupt. Khalil grabs Starr, forcing a chaotic escape to his Impala. As they flee, Starr confirms Kenya is safe by text, while Khalil suspects the shooting stems from King Lords–Garden Disciples tensions.

In the car, they discuss Tupac’s THUG LIFE—“The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everybody”—and how societal harms rebound. Starr challenges Khalil about dealing and urges he seek her father’s help; he refuses, citing bills and his grandmother’s firing during chemo. Texts from Seven warn about the shooting, recalling childhood memories with their late friend Natasha and deepening the sense of loss.

Their moment of reconnection is interrupted by sirens and flashing blue lights in the rearview mirror, setting up a new, immediate threat.
