Overview

On the day Starr is to meet detectives, she forces herself through school by adopting her "Williamson Starr" persona. A tense but thawing exchange with Chris triggers flashbacks, exposing raw trauma. After school, a patrol car reignites fear. At Lisa’s clinic, Khalil’s mother Brenda collapses in grief; Lisa intervenes, and Starr grudgingly acknowledges Brenda’s pain, deepening Starr’s internal conflict as the interview looms.

Summary

On Monday morning, the day of her police interview, Starr breaks down while getting ready. The family prays together, with Maverick asking for protection and strength for each of them, including Ms. Rosalie’s family. Lisa drives Starr and Sekani to their gated school district, checking in to be sure Starr can handle the day and reminding her that living must continue despite Khalil’s death.

At Williamson, Starr switches into her “Williamson Starr” persona to avoid scrutiny. She reconnects with friends Maya and Hailey amid playful cafeteria debates and subtle reminders of class differences and social distance. Hailey’s recent emotional distance and online unfollowing weigh on Starr, but they keep up their normal routine.

At AP English, Chris blocks the doorway to apologize for “Condomgate.” Starr tries to stay firm, but his Fresh Prince bit makes her smile—until it triggers a vivid flashback to Khalil’s shooting. Overwhelmed, Starr cries and withdraws, and Hailey defends her. No one mentions Khalil at school, which both pains and relieves Starr.

After school, Hailey offers to retaliate against Chris, but Starr declines. Starr joins Seven, who picks up Sekani; a nearby patrol car at a light terrifies them until it drives off. They pick up Chinese food for Lisa’s clinic so Starr can eat before meeting detectives.

At the clinic, Lisa tends to patients as the kids bring food. Brenda, Khalil’s mother, arrives disheveled and devastated, repeating that “they killed my baby.” Lisa comforts her and calls Brenda’s sister Tammy for help. Starr, angry at Brenda’s past absence, lashes out privately, but Lisa rebukes her, reminding her that Brenda is a grieving mother. Starr brings Brenda a plate and, seeing Khalil’s eyes in her, accepts that Brenda’s grief is real as the interview draws near.
