Overview

While awaiting the grand jury’s decision, Starr’s feud with Hailey erupts after Hailey dismisses Khalil’s death, leading to a school fight and suspensions. Starr finally releases pent-up grief. Meanwhile, Maverick convenes rival gangs to promote unity and prevent destructive riots, strengthening family solidarity and resolve.

Summary

Starr recalls three intense hours before the grand jury, answering detailed questions from Ms. Monroe about Khalil’s shooting. Weeks later, with the decision pending, life continues at Williamson on a rainy Friday the thirteenth.

In the atrium, Hailey confronts Starr with photos proving Starr knew Khalil and demands an apology. Maya defends Starr and calls out Hailey’s past racist “jokes,” but Hailey escalates, saying Khalil was a drug dealer who would have died anyway and that the cop did everyone a favor. Starr snaps and punches Hailey. Remy grabs Starr, and Seven charges Remy; security and the headmaster break up the brawl.

Despite zero-tolerance policy, Dr. Davis issues three-day suspensions to all four, overruling Hailey and Remy’s influential father who argues for expulsion. In the car, Lisa chastises Starr for fighting, but Starr, overwhelmed by anger and trauma, screams and sobs, grieving Khalil, Natasha, and the loss of her friendship with Hailey.

Back home, Maverick hosts members of the King Lords and Garden Disciples, including Tim and the King Lord Goon. Anticipating a possible non-indictment, he urges unity and discipline to prevent riots and protect black-owned businesses, arguing territory wars fuel police abuses. The gangs agree to coordinate and de-escalate.

After dismissing the meeting, Maverick and Lisa review the fight video, lightly teasing but supporting their kids. Maverick comforts Starr until she laughs, and the parents assign mild consequences: homework and helping at the store during suspension, reaffirming family solidarity amid community tensions.
