Overview
On the morning of the grand jury, the Cedar Grove King Lords protect the Carters while family gathers. Maverick and Uncle Carlos reconcile, and they escort Starr to a courthouse swarmed by media and supporters. With Ms. Ofrah’s guidance and her parents nearby, Starr confronts her fear and begins testifying about Khalil’s shooting.
Summary
Starr wakes to a crowded kitchen as the Cedar Grove King Lords, dressed formally, share breakfast with her family on the morning of the grand jury. Lisa and Aunt Pam cook while Nana holds court, and Starr brings food outside to Maverick and Uncle Carlos, who reveal they have reconciled.
They trade neighborhood memories, highlighting the community’s resilience through figures like Mrs. Pearl and Fo’ty Ounce. Nana hurries Starr to get ready. A small convoy—Uncle Carlos driving, an off-duty officer riding along, and King Lords trailing—escorts Starr’s family toward the courthouse.
Downtown, they pass media vans and a kneeling crowd led by clergy. To avoid cameras, they enter through a back door. Ms. Ofrah meets them and explains procedures; only Starr’s parents may watch from a TV room. Family and guards offer support before leaving Starr to proceed alone.
Lisa gives Starr a firm, loving pep talk about true bravery—acting despite fear. Maverick embraces them both. The DA, Ms. Monroe, calls Starr in. Starr faces a diverse panel of grand jurors, is sworn in, confirms her rights, and states she is there voluntarily.
Ms. Monroe begins by asking about Starr’s relationship with Khalil. Though nervous, Starr recounts their lifelong friendship. Acknowledging her fear but buoyed by the prayers outside and her parents’ presence, Starr agrees to discuss the night of the shooting in detail, beginning her testimony.
