Overview
Daniel spots the woman he rescued earlier at the crowded VFW, where his friends start a bet to take her home. He refuses, recognizing she’s not interested and objecting to treating her like a prize. Brian’s unrequited feelings for married bartender Liz are exposed when her husband, Jake, arrives. Daniel departs to care for his child, underscoring his priorities.
Summary
Daniel sees the redheaded woman he pulled from a ditch earlier now sitting at the VFW bar. His friend Doug proposes a $100 bet to get her to leave with someone. Daniel refuses, objecting to betting on a person and noting she seems wealthy, transient, and uninterested in local hookups.
Doug shifts the wager to Brian, who hesitates because he’s fixated on Liz, the bartender. Doug pushes Brian to move on. Jake, Liz’s police officer husband, enters and publicly kisses Liz, confirming the marriage and visibly hurting Brian. Daniel and Doug silently judge Jake’s showiness while acknowledging Liz will not leave him.
Doug recruits Mike to try the bet, and Mike agrees, attracted to the woman. Daniel checks the time and decides to leave, citing the need to feed his child. As he heads out, Doug asks him to put in a good word, and Daniel declines the idea of lying. Doug hints at a “secret weapon” as Daniel exits.
