Overview
Shaken after encountering Alexis’s world at the hospital, Daniel is intercepted by Bri, who explains Neil’s presence and Alexis’s toxic family dynamics. Daniel goes to Alexis’s mansion, is confronted by the vast class divide, and sees her private sanctuary. Alexis, citing family expectations and legacy, ends their relationship despite Daniel’s pleas.
Summary
Daniel sits in his truck reeling from the hospital encounter, believing Alexis concealed major parts of her life—Neil living with her, her high-profile family, and coworkers—and feeling invisible in her world.
Bri, Alexis’s best friend, finds Daniel, gets in his truck, and clarifies key misunderstandings: Neil is squatting in the co-owned house and weaponizing the situation; Gabby and Jessica are toxic and irrelevant; Alexis’s parents are notoriously difficult. She assures Daniel that Alexis trusts her and is likely panicking, then sends him to Alexis’s house.
Daniel arrives at Alexis’s mansion and is overwhelmed by its opulence, realizing the true scale of her wealth and status. Touring the house underscores their social and cultural gulf. In the master bedroom—warm, personal, and filled with mementos from Wakan—Daniel finally recognizes the two versions of Alexis: the woman he knows on “vacation” versus her real life in Minneapolis.
Alexis explains the pressures: her father wants her back with Neil; Neil’s residency in the house is leverage; leaving Minneapolis would break a 125-year family legacy; bringing Daniel there could cost him his home and estrange her from her parents.
