Chapter 12

On a morning run with neighbor Jessica, Alexis admits she skipped a social event because she was out of town and is casually seeing someone. When pressed, Alexis shares the relationship isn’t serious and that she hasn’t told Neil.

Prompted by Jessica, Alexis reveals Neil’s pattern of emotional abuse: undermining comments about her hygiene and appearance, affection withdrawal, unpredictable moods, and control that eroded her self-esteem. Alexis explains her therapist named it abuse and that Neil’s affair finally gave her an exit. Jessica believes her and urges safety with the new fling.

Jessica mentions Marcus invited Neil to his upcoming birthday, and they decide to skip it. As they approach Alexis’s house, they find a police car and Neil. Neil announces he is moving back in, presenting documents proving co-residency and co-ownership. The officer confirms he cannot be removed without a restraining order.

Neil enters via the garage code and starts moving belongings into the basement guest room, telling Alexis he wants the house and improves his chances by residing there. Shocked and powerless, Alexis texts Jessica and Gabby for help; Marcus confirms the move is legal.

In the midst of the frantic messages, Daniel texts Alexis that he enjoyed seeing her, highlighting her divided life. Overwhelmed, Alexis screams into a pillow as Neil continues settling in.
