Chapter 15
Overview
Alexis arrives at Daniel’s B&B with friends under an alias and silently begs him to pretend they’re strangers. Hunter recognizes her and causes chaos, damaging the check-in area and Daniel’s laptop. Daniel completes a rattled, partial check-in as Alexis maintains the ruse, heightening secrecy and tension between them.
Summary
Preparing to greet weekend guests, Daniel tries to train Hunter to behave at the check-in counter, mindful that the dog must acclimate if Daniel is to run the B&B full-time. Two women arrive, and Daniel begins the check-in, reassured by the strong booking that helps his financial goals.
The third guest enters: it’s Alexis. She signals Daniel to keep quiet, appearing panicked. Before Daniel can process it, Hunter recognizes Alexis, drags the counter, cracks Daniel’s laptop, gouges the floor, and smothers her with affection, forcing the other women to retreat.
Daniel corrals Hunter outside, awkwardly covers by saying the dog likes redheads, and resumes a disjointed tour upstairs. He notices the reservation was made under “Ali Montgomery,” realizing he never knew Alexis’s full name despite their intimacy.
After placing the women in their rooms, Alexis meets Daniel’s eyes but closes her door. Daniel then sees her texts, culminating in a brief apology, leaving him confused, financially set back by the damage, and bound to honor her request for secrecy.
