Overview
Medra and Florence grieve Naveen’s death, and Florence reveals Naveen confessed his love days before the Games. Medra wrestles with guilt over saving Florence while losing Naveen. Blake arrives with a summons from Headmaster Kim to a disciplinary hearing and promises to stand with Medra.
Summary
Two days after the Games, Medra and Florence sit together in the First Year dorm, devastated by Naveen’s death. Medra is consumed by guilt, believing her choices saved Florence but doomed Naveen. Florence, grieving, recalls Naveen told her he loved her before the Games, and she asked for time she never got.
Florence admits she never learned whether she loved him back, intensifying both her sorrow and Medra’s remorse. Medra contrasts the slaughter in the dome with other failing students being sent to indentured service, fueling her anger at the crown and the school’s brutality.
A knock interrupts them. Blake arrives, exhausted and uneasy, to summon Medra to a disciplinary hearing called by Headmaster Kim. Florence, emboldened by grief, pointedly warns Blake not to leave Medra alone with Kim. Blake promises to stay with Medra and support her through the hearing.
Medra comforts Florence one last time, then leaves with Blake, apprehension mounting as the immediate aftermath of the Games turns toward formal judgment.
