Summary
Medra wakes in her room, battered from the forced leap, and Florence gently keeps her resting per the healer’s orders. Florence relays that the healer will check her at seven and Headmaster Kim expects her at eight, seeking who hurt her. Medra, in pain and defensive, doubts any protection will come.
As they talk, Florence confirms that Regan likely used thrallweave—vampiric coercion—and urges Medra not to push allies away. Medra warns Florence about dangers by association, but Florence refuses to abandon her, sharing her own history of resisting abusive nobles and insisting bullies shouldn’t win.
They debate Blake’s absence and possible loyalties; Medra assumes Blake sides with Regan, while Florence suggests he may have sought Sankara’s help earlier. Florence encourages rest and offers future support and a library visit. Medra devours the dinner tray and prepares to sleep.
Alone, Medra confronts the persistent voice in her mind. The woman hints she helped Medra survive and calls her of royal blood. When pressed, the voice references Medra’s accelerated infancy in Aercanum and declares there’s only one person who would go so far for her: she is Medra’s mother.
