Summary

Approaching the woman, the narrator notes her gaze is not fear or worship but pure hatred. He recalls that she once trusted him, trust he has now destroyed, and recognizes she sees him as a monster. Despite this, the compulsion of hunger and the bond overpowers restraint.
He bites her and drinks deeply, finding her blood uniquely potent and addictive. Rather than satisfying him, it intensifies his hunger. The woman tenses and tries to pull away, but he ignores her resistance, believing she will adapt because “this was our way.”
Without warning, his fangs are torn from her neck and the ground erupts around them. After the brief chaos subsides, the narrator sees the fresh bite marks and understands the consequence: his actions have placed her in greater danger than before.
As she turns toward him, the narrator realizes the true cost—he has not only endangered her but irreparably shattered any hope of forgiveness.
