Chapter 28
Overview
With Orcades seizing control, Medra is thrust into Blake’s mind and witnesses his grief over Coregon, fierce anger toward her, and deep love for his sister Aenia. A pivotal memory reveals Blake protected Medra from execution by Headmaster Kim. The invasion ends with Blake rattled and retreating, complicating their bond.
Summary
Medra’s mother, Orcades, seizes control and uses Medra as a conduit to strike back at Blake by forcibly entering his mind. Despite fear and outrage, Medra allows it, demanding answers as Orcades tears through Blake’s thoughts without subtlety.
They are flooded by Blake’s emotions—consuming rage interlaced with grief and betrayal over being forced to kill Coregon, and a focused anger toward Medra. The chaos settles into a vivid memory: a younger Blake joyfully playing with his little sister, Aenia, revealing his capacity for love and protectiveness.
Orcades then exposes a critical scene in Headmaster Kim’s office after the arena conflict. Wounded, Blake lies to assume blame and dissuades Kim from executing Medra for attacking an archon, insisting his own misconduct was at fault, thereby shielding her from lethal punishment.
Finally, in an arena recollection, Blake’s gaze toward Medra carries thirst, desire, and sorrow. The connection snaps, and they return to Professor Rodriguez’s office. Blake, shaken and furious, fixates on Aenia and demands to know what Medra saw. When Medra answers, he abruptly leaves, slamming the door, and Medra is left alone with the revelations.
