Overview
Paul initiates the decisive assault on Arrakeen by coordinating Fremen forces, the coming sandstorm, and atomics used to breach the Shield Wall. The Emperor refuses to acknowledge Paul’s Atreides claim and instead signals CHOAM interests, confirming that the struggle is political and economic as much as military. Just as Paul traps the enemy by stripping away their shields, he receives devastating news: Sietch Tabr has been raided, Leto II is dead, and Alia is a hostage.
Summary
At dawn, Paul, Stilgar, and Gurney observe Arrakeen from a hidden position high on the Shield Wall. Below them stand the Emperor’s huge temporary metal lodging, Sardaukar legions, Harkonnen frigates, and the remaining enemy-held basin. Paul notes that the enemy believes shields and Imperial strength will protect them, while he relies on the coming storm and his threat to the spice cycle to keep the Guild and the Great Houses from interfering.
Inside the concealed Fremen command position, Stilgar reports that the released captive Sardaukar are returning to the Emperor and that Paul’s rockets, projectile weapons, and troops are in place. Gurney worries about using atomics to blast the Shield Wall, but Paul argues that the Great Convention forbids atomics against humans, not against terrain. Paul also defends his use of Arrakeen city people as shock troops, explaining that Sardaukar brutality has transformed the refugees’ resentment into a clear hatred and given them a shared identity worth fighting for.
The captive Sardaukar reach the Imperial camp, revealing to the enemy that an Atreides still lives. Paul watches to see whether the Emperor will restore the Atreides flag and acknowledge his claim, but the Emperor raises the CHOAM flag instead, signaling that profit and control of Arrakis matter more than legitimacy. As the storm arrives sooner and stronger than expected, Paul orders the gunners to set their sights before visibility collapses and sends Stilgar and the Fremen forces down into the basin.
Paul leaves Gurney in charge of the atomic trigger and orders patrols cleared from the blast zone. When the storm front hits, Paul gives the signal, Gurney detonates the charge, and the Shield Wall is breached. The storm pours into the basin, destroying shield barriers and allowing Fremen gunners to attack the enemy ships, trapping the Imperial and Harkonnen forces on Arrakis.
After retreating into the tunnel command post, Paul waits for news amid heavy static. A garbled message reports a raid on Sietch Tabr, captives taken, Alia among them, and the death of Muad’Dib’s son. Paul immediately understands that Leto II is dead and Alia has become a hostage, leaving him emotionally emptied as the battle he has unleashed now carries personal grief and the threat of wider cruelty.
