Overview
Paul consolidates victory in Arrakeen by forcing the Emperor, the Guild, and the Bene Gesserit to recognize his power over the throne and the spice. Thufir Hawat dies loyal to the Atreides, Feyd-Rautha dies in kanly, and Count Fenring refuses to kill Paul, removing the last immediate threats. Paul chooses a political marriage to Irulan while assuring Chani of his true loyalty, but he also realizes the Fremen jihad can no longer be stopped.
Summary
After the Fremen victory, Paul-Muad’Dib enters the Arrakeen Residency, the former Atreides seat and later Rabban’s residence, to make his triumph unmistakable. Gurney Halleck and Stilgar warn that the building is unsafe and tainted by the enemy, but Paul insists on occupying it as a symbol. While Fremen secure the hall, Paul orders Chani and Jessica brought to him, asks about storm damage and the worms, and prepares to summon the defeated Emperor.
Paul’s prescience remains clouded by the coming jihad, and he privately grieves Leto II while forcing himself to remain controlled. Stilgar reports the discovery of Baron Harkonnen’s body, confirming what Paul already knows through Alia’s strange contact with his time-sense. Paul then sends a captured Sardaukar officer to Shaddam IV with an Atreides pledge of safe conduct if the Emperor lays down arms and comes to the Residency.
Jessica arrives and is disturbed by Paul’s hardness, especially when Paul describes Alia killing enemy wounded for water recovery. Paul declares that he can deny nothing now because he is the Kwisatz Haderach, and he tells Jessica that Princess Irulan will be his political bride and key to the throne. Chani enters grieving for their dead son, and Paul comforts her only briefly before arranging the hall for Shaddam’s arrival.
The Emperor enters with his entourage, including Irulan, Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, Count Fenring, Guild representatives, and Thufir Hawat. Thufir, ordered by the Emperor to kill Paul with a poisoned needle, instead reveals the weapon and dies loyal to House Atreides. Paul then breaks the Emperor’s political defenses: he dismisses the charge of unlawful atomics, threatens to destroy all spice production unless the Guild withdraws the fleet, and humiliates Mohiam by declaring that the Bene Gesserit have produced the Kwisatz Haderach but cannot command him.
Paul demands Irulan as the path to the throne, but Gurney’s hatred of the Harkonnens and Feyd-Rautha’s challenge turn the confrontation into formal kanly. Paul refuses Jessica’s offered Bene Gesserit word that might incapacitate Feyd and fights him without that advantage. Feyd uses layered treacheries, including a soporific-coated blade and a hidden poisoned needle, but Paul overcomes them and kills Feyd with his crysknife.
Shaddam silently urges Count Fenring to kill Paul, and Fenring realizes he could do it because he is an almost-Kwisatz Haderach hidden from Paul’s prescience. Out of kinship and private understanding, Fenring refuses, ending Shaddam’s last hope. Paul sentences Shaddam to Salusa Secundus, promises the Fremen a transformed but still partly desert Arrakis, and appoints Jessica and Chani to negotiate the settlement: Irulan will marry Paul for politics only, the Emperor’s CHOAM holdings will be dowry, Gurney will receive Caladan and titles, and Chani will remain Paul’s true beloved despite lacking the formal title of wife.
