Overview
At a formal Arrakeen dinner, Duke Leto challenges Harkonnen-era water customs and uses the gathering to signal that Atreides rule will change the planet’s social order. The evening exposes key local power structures: Bewt’s water influence, Kynes’s hidden authority among Fremen-aligned interests, Tuek’s usefulness, and a Guild Bank representative’s Harkonnen allegiance.
Jessica and Paul both navigate provocations with Bene Gesserit-trained perception, while Kynes increasingly aligns himself with the Atreides after hearing their dream for Arrakis. Leto’s recovery of the stolen carryall is a victory, but the attempted lasgun shipment reveals that the Harkonnen threat is escalating in unpredictable and potentially catastrophic ways.
Summary
Duke Leto inspects the Arrakeen dining hall before a formal dinner and notices the wasteful Harkonnen laving-basin custom, in which guests spill water and beggars later buy towel-squeezings. Angered by the degradation and by the serving woman’s apparent plan to profit from it, Leto orders the basins moved to the front door so each beggar may receive a full cup of water under guard.
At the reception, Leto observes Jessica, Paul, Duncan Idaho, Kynes, local magnates, and other guests. Lingar Bewt, a powerful water-shipper, challenges Leto over Arrakeen water customs and the house conservatory. Jessica defuses the challenge by saying the Atreides intend to hold the conservatory in trust for Arrakis, hoping the planet may someday support such plants openly; Kynes reacts as if Jessica has touched a prophecy, asking whether she brings “the shortening of the way.”
Dinner begins tensely. Leto maintains his public coldness toward Jessica to preserve the false suspicion around her, then gives a harsh toast declaring his permanence on Arrakis and forcing the guests to pour out clean water. The act exposes local fear and reverence toward water; Kynes quietly saves his in a hidden container, revealing his practical Fremen-influenced values.
Conversation turns to the lost spice crawler and the missing carryall. Jessica, using Bene Gesserit training, identifies the Guild Bank representative’s masked Giedi Prime speech pattern and concludes he is a Harkonnen agent. Paul deliberately draws the banker into an exchange about competition and survival, while Kynes defends Fremen water customs and openly intimidates the banker, revealing that the banker fears him and that Tuek seems ready to support Kynes.
Kynes discusses Arrakis ecology and suggests there may be enough water to begin transforming the planet, though Kynes tries to conceal the full truth. Leto is called away by a Hawat corps trooper and leaves Paul to host. The banker then provokes Paul, but Paul answers with a pointed drowning parable; Jessica prepares for violence, recognizes a sexual lure involving the stillsuit manufacturer’s daughter, and sees Kynes and Tuek intervene on Paul’s side.
Jessica receives Leto’s coded note: the missing carryall has been recovered after a Harkonnen agent tried to sell it at a smuggler base, and the Harkonnens also attempted to obtain lasguns. The public news reassures the guests, but the coded warning leaves Jessica uneasy because lasgun-shield interactions are dangerously unpredictable. Paul boasts of Leto’s effectiveness, while Jessica privately knows the Atreides must take deeper precautions.
