Overview
Paul’s trap for smugglers reunites him with Gurney Halleck, who discovers that Paul is alive, Fremen, and now openly acting as Duke Atreides. The chapter expands Paul’s strategic position: Fremen desert mobility, possible Sardaukar infiltration, Guild dependence on spice, and the power to destroy spice all become central to his campaign.
Paul also resolves the dangerous Fremen expectation that he must kill Stilgar to lead, forcing Stilgar to accept that their ways can change. The reunion carries a hidden threat, however, because Gurney learns Jessica is alive and privately renews his mistaken belief that she betrayed House Atreides.
Summary
Gurney Halleck leads a smuggler spice factory, carrier, and ornithopter cover into deep desert after a spotter confirms a spice patch near a low rock ridge. Because the area is Fremen country and shields would attract worms, Gurney orders cautious scans, lands with a ground party, and prepares to inspect the rocks while the crawler moves toward the spice.
The ridge suddenly erupts with Fremen rockets and fighters. Gurney’s air cover is destroyed and the factory is captured, but a hooded fighter confronts him by name and reveals himself as Paul Atreides. Gurney, who believed Paul dead, joyfully embraces him, then recognizes that Paul has become a harder, more calculating leader. Paul orders the smugglers disarmed, and Gurney signals that some among the crew are dangerous and not to be trusted.
Paul introduces Gurney to Stilgar as his father’s master-at-arms and trusted friend. Gurney realizes Paul is now Duke Atreides, and Paul explains that the apparent spice patch was bait. When a worm approaches, Fremen divert and mount it, revealing to Gurney the practical meaning of Fremen desert power. Paul argues that Rabban’s forces have lost the initiative by fortifying themselves while the Fremen can move freely.
Chani arrives, and Paul identifies her to Gurney as the mother of his firstborn, another Leto Atreides. As a storm approaches, the Fremen hide the captured crawler in a concealed cave called the Cave of Birds. Gurney warns Paul that suspicious offworld recruits among the smugglers may be Imperial Sardaukar, not Harkonnen agents, and Paul prepares to secure the prisoners.
Inside the cave, a sudden alarm reveals that disguised Sardaukar retained hidden weapons and are attacking the Fremen in disciplined groups. Paul recognizes their fighting style, narrowly avoids a thrown Imperial knife, and forces the surviving Sardaukar captain, Aramsham, to identify himself using the Voice. The captain submits after killing one of his own men to prevent a reckless attack, while Paul explains to Korba how thoroughly Sardaukar must be searched and then declares that he wants the prisoners to escape.
Paul’s decision reveals a larger strategy: the Guild depends on spice, and the people who can destroy spice effectively control it. Paul then confronts the unresolved Fremen expectation that he must challenge Stilgar for leadership. By handing Stilgar the Sardaukar knife and asking whether Stilgar could kill him for the tribe, Paul proves that Stilgar cannot raise a hand against the Lisan al-Gaib and persuades him that Fremen ways must change. Paul sends Chani to summon Jessica, intending to avoid a leadership duel, but Gurney is shocked to learn Jessica lives and secretly resolves to expose and kill the woman he wrongly believes betrayed Duke Leto.
