Overview
Paul’s curiosity nearly leads him into danger when a hidden hunter-seeker attempts to assassinate him in his new room. His training and self-control allow him to destroy the device and save the Shadout Mapes, deepening her obligation to him.
Mapes reveals that the Fremen know there is a traitor among the Atreides, confirming the household’s vulnerability. Paul’s response shows his growing competence on Arrakis as he orders a lockdown and moves to find Jessica.
Summary
Paul lies in his room pretending to sleep after secretly palming Dr. Yueh’s sleeping tablet instead of swallowing it. Wanting to explore the new house without directly disobeying orders, Paul studies the room’s hidden controls and thinks about what he has already learned of Arrakis, including its desert plants, spice, and sandworms.
After Jessica leaves and Paul believes Yueh remains occupied in the next room, Paul gets up to begin exploring. As Paul moves, the carved headboard folds down over the bed where Paul had been lying, revealing a hidden hunter-seeker assassination device. Paul freezes because he recognizes that the weapon’s operator will be guided mainly by motion in the dim room.
Paul calculates the hunter-seeker’s weaknesses and realizes shouting for Yueh would probably cause the device to attack whoever opened the door. When the Shadout Mapes enters to summon Paul to Duke Leto, the hunter-seeker darts toward Mapes’s movement. Paul seizes it, smashes its transmitter eye against the metal doorplate, and disables it, saving both Mapes and himself.
Mapes identifies herself as the housekeeper and acknowledges that Paul has placed a “water burden” on her by saving her life. Because Fremen repay debts, Mapes warns Paul that the Fremen know there is a traitor among the Atreides, though they do not know who it is. Paul orders Mapes to alert his father’s men, seal the house and grounds, and search for the hunter-seeker’s operator.
After Mapes leaves, Paul reflects on the clues in her words, especially that she is Fremen and that Jessica was seen near a “weirding room.” Paul memorizes Mapes’s face, straps on his shield belt, and heads down the hall toward where Mapes indicated Jessica had gone.
