Overview
Jamis challenges Paul under Fremen law to test Jessica’s place in their prophecy, forcing Paul into his first lethal knife duel without a shield. Paul kills Jamis, but his reluctance and remorse transform how Stilgar’s troop understands him, leading to his acceptance as Usul and Paul-Muad’Dib. The victory secures Paul and Jessica’s place among the Fremen while deepening Paul’s fear that his messianic path may still lead to jihad.
Summary
Princess Irulan’s epigraph frames Emperor Shaddam IV as powerful but constrained, complicit in Duke Leto’s death and the return of Arrakis to the Harkonnens. It also contrasts Irulan’s mother, who obeyed the Bene Gesserit, with Jessica, whose disobedience has already altered history.
In the Cave of the Ridges, Jessica wakes after a deep sleep and realizes she feels unexpectedly secure among Stilgar’s troop. As the Fremen prepare for night travel, Jessica worries about getting word to the Bene Gesserit and notices Paul’s strange, inward behavior after his spice-heightened visions.
Tension erupts when Jamis invokes the amtal rule, demanding that Jessica’s role in the Fremen legend be tested through combat by her champion. Because Paul previously bested Jamis, Jamis presses for a death challenge against Paul. Stilgar tries to deflect or discourage the challenge, but Fremen law requires the fight. Jessica cannot intervene without turning the troop against herself and Paul, though Jessica frightens Jamis with a Bene Gesserit threat before being ordered to silence.
Paul enters the knife ring with Chani’s crysknife and advice about Jamis’s habits. Paul’s training gives him superior speed, but Paul’s shield-conditioned attack timing makes his counters too slow, and the Fremen mistake Paul’s hesitation for cruelty. After first blood, Paul asks Jamis to yield, only to learn that a tahaddi challenge can end only in death. Paul then lets Jamis’s fear grow, reads Jamis’s desperate knife shift, and kills Jamis with a thrust as Jamis attacks.
Afterward, Jessica deliberately shames Paul to prevent him from taking pride in killing, while Stilgar rebukes Paul for seeming to toy with Jamis. Paul explains that he had never killed a man with a naked blade and did not want Jamis dead, which changes Stilgar’s understanding of the fight. The Fremen accept Paul and Jessica more fully, naming Paul secretly Usul and asking him to choose an open manhood name.
Paul chooses Muad’Dib, the desert mouse, but keeps his birth name as Paul-Muad’Dib, creating a variation from his visions. Stilgar explains the strength and desert wisdom associated with the name, and the troop embraces Paul as one of the Ichwan Bedwine. Stilgar orders Paul’s stillsuit properly fitted, authorizes careful distribution of Jessica’s water to those in need, and commands full rites for Jamis. Even after this acceptance, Paul feels trapped near the abyss of his prescient future and fears the jihad under the Atreides banner still lies ahead.
