Overview

Yueh moves through the immediate aftermath of the Atreides collapse, facing Sardaukar supervision and Harkonnen contempt while preserving the one part of his plan still within his control. By hiding Duke Leto’s signet ring in the ornithopter’s Fremkit, Yueh strengthens Paul and Jessica’s chance of survival. The chapter underscores Yueh’s double role as both betrayer and desperate protector, while setting up Duke Leto’s poisoned-tooth attempt against the Baron.

Summary

In the aftermath of Yueh’s betrayal, a man in Harkonnen uniform enters the hall and immediately recognizes Yueh. Yueh realizes from the man’s bearing and language that he is actually Sardaukar, likely one of the Emperor’s soldiers sent to supervise the Harkonnen assault. The Sardaukar confirms the house shields are down, sees Duke Leto unconscious, and asks about the missing ducal signet ring.

Yueh hides the truth about the ring by claiming that Duke Leto sometimes sent it with trusted messengers. The Sardaukar cuts the Atreides hawk insignia from Leto’s uniform as a souvenir, insults the Duke, and orders Yueh outside. Being called a traitor forces Yueh to confront how history will remember him, even though Yueh still hopes his hidden preparations will save Paul and Jessica.

Yueh passes through the ruined house, afraid of seeing Paul or Jessica among the bodies, but finds only Atreides troopers and Harkonnen uniforms. Outside, the Harkonnens have set the palms ablaze to light the captured residence. Guards recognize and despise Yueh as the traitor, making clear that even those who benefited from Yueh’s actions hold Yueh in contempt.

Yueh worries that Duncan Idaho may fail to follow Yueh’s instructions, which would doom Paul and Jessica despite Yueh’s sacrifice and treachery. Slipping away from the guards with apparent casualness, Yueh reaches the hidden ornithopter beneath the conservatory. There, Yueh opens the Fremkit, hides Duke Leto’s signet ring inside with the note written on spice paper, and reseals the pack for Paul to find.

After completing this final act of preparation, Yueh returns to the front of the house and waits in the glow of the burning palms. Yueh expects the Baron’s arrival and clings to the thought that the Baron will soon face the poison tooth Yueh placed in Duke Leto’s mouth.
