Overview
Stilgar’s troop reaches the Cave of the Ridges, where Jessica learns that the Fremen secretly bribe the Guild to hide their ecological transformation of Arrakis. Jessica uses Bene Gesserit religious conditioning to secure a sacred Fremen role as Sayyadina, strengthening her and Paul’s place among the tribe. Paul’s exposure to concentrated spice deepens his prescience and reveals a dangerous nexus in which small actions may lead to vast consequences, including his own death.
Summary
At dawn, Stilgar’s troop reaches the Cave of the Ridges through a narrow cleft. Guards climb to take the first watch, and Stilgar hurries everyone inside before daylight exposes them to patrols. Chani gives Paul spice-heavy food and tells him to rest, while Stilgar takes Jessica to an opening overlooking a protected basin and points out the distant Fremen home they will reach that night.
Stilgar explains Fremen discipline, leadership, and the tribe’s practical respect for strength. Jessica worries that defeating Stilgar may have undermined him, but Stilgar says Jessica did not formally challenge him. He reveals that the Fremen have been delivering spice to free traders for the Guild, paying enormous bribes so no satellites can observe their hidden work on Arrakis.
Jessica learns that Liet’s long-term plan is to transform Arrakis slowly into a livable world with open water and green plants. A mirage shows what appears to be Fremen riding a giant worm, and Stilgar’s casual mention that they cannot allow a maker into the basin confirms to Jessica that the Fremen can control or ride sandworms. Stilgar also hints at personal and political alternatives to conflict between them, including the possibility that Jessica might become a Sayyadina because the tribe’s Reverend Mother is old.
Stilgar explains that Fremen legend says a Bene Gesserit and her offspring may hold the key to their future. Jessica recognizes Bene Gesserit Missionaria Protectiva patterns in Fremen belief, but also senses that something unusual has altered or intensified them. Acting boldly, Jessica speaks ritual words that trigger the Fremen response; the troop accepts her as Sayyadina, and Stilgar says she may yet pass within to become a Reverend Mother if Shai-hulud grants it.
Meanwhile, Paul stands with Chani and feels the spice-rich food interact with Jessica’s words. The spice pushes Paul into a deeper prescient state, revealing time as a web of unstable possibilities centered on the cave. Paul understands that seeing the future changes it, and he becomes terrified by the consequence-lines around him, many of which end with Paul dead from a knife wound.
