Overview
Reverend Mother Mohiam condemns Jessica for bearing Paul instead of the daughter the Bene Gesserit intended, revealing that the order’s breeding plan meant to join Atreides and Harkonnen bloodlines. Paul’s prophetic dreams deepen the sense that he may be the Kwisatz Haderach, but Mohiam remains uncertain and warns that Duke Leto is effectively beyond saving. The chapter shifts Paul’s danger from political threat to near-certain catastrophe, while forcing Jessica to accelerate his Bene Gesserit training for survival.
Summary
After Paul’s ordeal with the gom jabbar, Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam confronts Jessica in Jessica’s morning room while Paul waits in a soundproofed chamber. Mohiam rebukes Jessica for disobeying Bene Gesserit breeding orders by bearing Duke Leto a son instead of a daughter. Jessica admits she sensed the possibility of producing the Kwisatz Haderach, while Mohiam argues that Jessica’s choice endangered both the Atreides and Harkonnen bloodlines.
Mohiam warns that Jessica and Paul may soon become fugitives and that shielding Paul too much could weaken him. The discussion broadens to the political forces around Arrakis: CHOAM profits, the Emperor, the Great Houses, and the Guild’s unstable balance of power. Mohiam says the Bene Gesserit can only try to prevent wider catastrophe and preserve key bloodlines.
Jessica asks whether Arrakis is truly terrible, and Mohiam replies that it is bad, though the Bene Gesserit Missionaria Protectiva has prepared some groundwork there. Mohiam then tells Jessica to summon Paul, softening briefly and admitting affection for Jessica despite the demands of duty. Jessica, shaken and lonely, brings Paul into the room.
Mohiam questions Paul about his dreams. Paul says he can remember all dreams but knows which ones matter. He describes recurring visions of a skinny, blue-eyed girl in a rocky desert refuge, calling him “Usul” and asking about the waters of his homeworld. Jessica recognizes and recites the sea poem from Gurney Halleck that Paul tells the girl in the dream.
Mohiam tells Paul she seeks the Kwisatz Haderach and sees possibility in him, but no certainty. Paul resists her vague guidance and grows angry that Mohiam speaks as though Duke Leto is already lost. Mohiam bluntly says nothing can be done for Leto, but Paul might still be salvaged, and she instructs Jessica to ignore the normal training sequence and teach Paul more of the Voice for his immediate safety. As Mohiam leaves, Jessica sees tears on the Reverend Mother’s face, which frightens her more than anything Mohiam has said.
