Overview

Chani is brought north to help Jessica revive Paul, who has lain in a deathlike coma for three weeks after drinking the Water of Life. Paul awakens, proves that Paul can do what only Reverend Mothers do, and Jessica realizes Paul is the Kwisatz Haderach.

Paul’s expanded awareness reveals a vast Imperial, Harkonnen, Guild, and Great House threat poised above Arrakis. Instead of retreating, Paul identifies the ultimate leverage: the ability to destroy the spice cycle, giving Paul power over every force that depends on melange.

Summary

Chani is secretly flown north from the southern sietches before dawn, confused and frightened because Paul had ordered her to remain with their son, Leto, and Alia. Otheym hurries Chani into the Cave of Birds, where Jessica waits and delays through formal greetings before revealing that Jessica, not Paul, summoned Chani under Paul’s name.

Jessica explains that Paul has lain unconscious for three weeks, appearing dead to everyone except those with the most refined awareness. Jessica suspects poison, has failed to revive Paul, and fears some Fremen leaders will accuse Jessica of withholding Paul’s water from the tribe. Chani studies Paul and, thinking through his habits and the Fremen use of spice, asks for raw Water of Life.

When Chani brings the raw Water near Paul, Paul reacts and breathes. Chani orders Jessica to convert a small amount, but Paul wakes before Jessica can do so and reveals that he deliberately drank one drop of the Water of Life. For Paul, only moments have passed; for Jessica and Chani, Paul’s ordeal has lasted three weeks.

Paul drinks more of the Water and survives, proving that Paul can change it as a Reverend Mother can. Paul then forces a terrifying awareness-rapport with Jessica and makes Jessica show Paul the psychic place Bene Gesserit women cannot enter. Jessica understands that Paul is the Kwisatz Haderach, the fulfillment of the Bene Gesserit dream, though the realization brings Jessica fear rather than peace.

Paul explains that Paul stands as a fulcrum between ancient forces of giving and taking. Otheym secretly overhears, and Chani foresees that the story will spread, strengthening belief that Paul is truly the Lisan al-Gaib. Paul then says Paul has seen not merely the future but the present: the Emperor, Sardaukar, Baron Harkonnen, Thufir Hawat, the Guild, and many Great House forces wait above Arrakis.

Paul reveals that the Guild helped provoke the crisis by making troop transport cheap, yet the Guild hesitates because the Guild depends on spice and cannot find Paul in prescient vision. Paul orders Jessica to prepare changed Water and Chani to send scouts for a pre-spice mass. Paul intends to threaten the spice cycle itself, because whoever can destroy the spice has real control over Arrakis and the powers gathered above it.
