Overview
Hidden in the desert after Duncan Idaho's rescue, Paul and Jessica reckon with Leto's confirmed death, the collapse of Atreides forces, and the Harkonnen-Sardaukar effort to eliminate all survivors. Paul's spice-heightened awareness opens into prescience, revealing both practical truths about Fremen power on Arrakis and terrifying possible futures.
Paul discovers that the Fremen may offer sanctuary and that they secretly influence the planet by paying the Guild in spice for privacy. He also reveals Jessica's pregnancy and her Harkonnen ancestry, forcing both mother and son to confront the Bene Gesserit's breeding schemes and the possibility that Paul is an unforeseen product of them.
The chapter marks Paul's transformation from fugitive heir into a prescient figure who sees paths toward survival, vengeance, and catastrophic jihad, while finally beginning to grieve his father.
Summary
Paul and Jessica hide in a stilltent among rocks after Duncan Idaho rescues them in the desert. Paul understands that Yueh placed the Fremkit and the ducal signet in the ornithopter and directed the escape route toward Duncan. Yueh's note confirms Duke Leto's death and says Leto did not die alone, but Paul is disturbed because his father's death registers as a fact rather than grief.
Jessica tries to assess their situation, but Paul has become frighteningly analytical, combining Mentat-like calculation with something beyond it. They hear Atreides battle-language reports over the receiver: survivors are scattered, Sardaukar are disguised in Atreides uniforms, Carthag has been struck, and the Guild Bank has been sacked. Paul concludes the Harkonnens are trying to trap the Atreides on Arrakis by turning the Guild against them.
Paul insists they cannot rely on others and must secure the family atomics, while Jessica hopes some Atreides forces may survive. Studying the Fremen survival equipment, Paul infers that the Fremen possess a sophisticated desert culture and that they pay the Guild in spice to prevent weather satellites from watching the deep desert. He argues that true power on Arrakis belongs to the Fremen, not the Harkonnens.
Paul gives Jessica Leto's final message: Leto never suspected Jessica, always trusted and loved her, and regretted not making her Duchess. Jessica breaks down in grief, while Paul remains unable to mourn. His awareness then expands into a terrifying vision of possible futures, including death, the Guild, unknown cultures, and many branching paths.
Paul blames Jessica's Bene Gesserit training and the spice-saturated environment for awakening him. He says spice is an addictive poison that has changed him irreversibly and that they are trapped on Arrakis unless they carry Arrakis with them. He also reveals that Jessica is pregnant with a daughter and that the Missionaria Protectiva has prepared a refuge for them among the Fremen.
Paul further reveals that Jessica is Baron Harkonnen's daughter, making Paul Harkonnen as well as Atreides. Jessica realizes Paul may be the Kwisatz Haderach, but Paul insists he is something unexpected. Looking ahead, Paul sees two major paths: one involving the Baron and another leading to a violent religious war under the Atreides banner. He chooses the Fremen refuge as one possible way forward and foresees that they will call him Muad'Dib, finally allowing himself to mourn Leto.
