Chapter 54
Overview
Diem grapples with becoming Queen of Fortos, hides her new Crown, and burns the dead king to avoid unrest. She refuses to abandon imprisoned mortals, wins tentative trust with a vision of balanced justice, and frees and aids them. Claiming the Forging, she restores Luther’s magic and heals the captive Enness—returning his power to protect the escape.
Summary
Diem reels at being named Queen of Fortos, admitting fear and reluctance while Luther affirms her worth. Learning that freeing prisoners defies Fortos law, she decides to keep the coronation quiet. Triggered by memories of her father, she has Luther confirm the Fortos king’s death, then burns the body to prevent chaos. Auralie admits to having taken lives, upending Diem’s image of her mother.
Determined to save the mortals, Diem argues with Auralie over priorities and insists her mother leave with them. Addressing the captives, Diem rejects endless vengeance, pledging to fight unjust rule by Descended and extremists alike, and to build a world guided by fairness and balance. She melts the cages, heals wounds, conjures water, and accidentally floods the room with dandelions, lifting spirits. Runa introduces herself as hope returns, but Diem and Luther note the ominous absence of soldiers.
Preparing to arm the group, Diem taps the Forging as Fortos’s Crown and shatters the cocoon stifling Luther’s magic, confirming her new title. She then seeks a secret prisoner: Enness, an Arboros Descended captured helping mortals. Finding his legs cruelly “healed” into deformity, Diem fuses healer training with godhood to painstakingly reset bone and muscle, finally succeeding.
To counter flameroot suppression, Diem channels a silver light of balance, purging Enness’s blood and restoring his power. Enness grows living vines and grapes, joyfully confirming his magic’s return and pledging to protect the mortals. Humbled by the prison’s despair, Diem promises that people will no longer be brought here to die, as they ready for a dangerous escape.
