Chapter 42

Diem, Taran, Alixe, and Sorae reach Lumnos with an unconscious, bleeding Luther. The city and palace are heavily occupied by Emarion soldiers, heightening tension. In Diem’s chambers, Luther’s condition is dire, his veins blackened by godstone. Diem dispatches Alixe and Sorae to fetch Maura and supplies, while she organizes Teller, Lily, Taran, and Zalaric to prepare salves and care.

Alone with Luther, Diem tries to heal him using her Kindred power. She senses Luther’s godhood meet hers, but the godstone burns her magic back. Though some tissues mend briefly, the poison’s cage tightens around Luther’s still-strong heart, and Diem must withdraw, shaken.

Eleanor arrives to sit vigil, and Maura soon follows with supplies. Despite methodical treatment and a recreated poultice, nothing reverses the poisoning. Diem considers returning to Ignios for spring water, but Taran and Alixe warn against the risk. The group keeps watch as Diem’s fear and love for Luther surface; she admits she never told him she loves him.

Remis and Avana force their way in with Lily and Teller. Diem clashes with Remis, barring him from Luther’s side and asserting Zalaric’s protection, but relents when Lily pleads for her parents to remain. The room divides: Maura continues attempts while the others maintain a quiet vigil, hoping for any sign of improvement.

After exhausting her strongest mortal remedies and reviewing Diem’s mother’s notes, Maura concludes there is nothing more to be done. On the balcony, she urges Diem to say her goodbyes and discreetly presses a powerful sleeping draught into Diem’s hand—a painless mercy should Luther’s decline continue. Diem returns to a gray, occupied Lumnos with only the draught and dwindling hope.
