Chapter 48
Overview
Diem heals Luther, then seeks closure with Henri and discovers he is with Lana—and that he long knew Auralie’s location. She resolves to free Auralie immediately and warns Henri against Vance. Returning to Mortal City, Diem publicly claims authority, humiliates a Fortos commander, and wins visible mortal support.
Summary
Diem returns to her chambers to find Luther raging over Remis and Garath. She pacifies the group by sharing a mental replay of the confrontation with Garath to Taran, but accidentally brushes sensitive memories, drawing Teller’s suspicion. Diem refuses Luther’s demand to see the memory, confirms his wound is fully healed, and departs alone to finish difficult business before leaving for Fortos. She instructs Alixe—now Remis’s High General—to protect mortals even if it means outwardly obeying him.
Arriving over Mortal City, Diem uses Sorae to distract pursuing soldiers and slips into town. She heads to Henri’s family post office and finds Henri passionately kissing Lana, a healer. Tension flares as Henri accuses Diem of becoming like the Descended, while Diem counters with Vance’s abuses and Henri’s absence during her trials. They admit mismatched love; Henri wanted marriage and family, while Diem could not promise that.
As they argue, Henri reveals he believed Vance’s version of Arboros and, under pressure, implies he knew Auralie had gone to the island all along but kept the Guardians’ secret. Wounded and angry, Diem warns him Vance’s hate will destroy him and declares she will break Auralie out today. Henri brightens at Auralie’s return but remains conflicted; they part on opposing, uncertain terms.
Diem then addresses the crowded square, declaring her mortal roots and intent to protect mortals while seeking peace with good Descended. A Fortos commander arrives to arrest her by edict. Diem refuses, publicly challenges his authority, and melts soldiers’ blades with Lumnos light. When they unleash magic, her godhood absorbs the attacks; Sorae lands to intimidate them.
Diem threatens retaliation for any further mortal disappearances, asserts herself as Queen of Lumnos, and departs on Sorae. As she ascends, mortals across the square kneel, signaling a pivotal shift in their faith and the realm’s balance of power.
