Summary
Diem, Luther, and Teller arrive at Teller’s communal Sophos tower, where Diem observes the city’s curated curiosity and hidden inequities, including mortal exclusion and addiction. In Teller’s suite, Diem presses her brother about returning home and facing his love for Lily; Luther pointedly argues true love fights, igniting tension.
In private, Diem challenges Luther for being absent during the attack. Luther demands she share her memories, and Diem opens them, exposing her terror and near-loss. Luther then shows his view: awe at Diem’s prowess, his restraint, and his pursuit of Vance into a school after sensing Ophiucae’s arrival.
Inside, Luther confronts Vance threatening a mortal teacher and toddlers. When Ophiucae’s shield drops, the teacher fights back, and Luther binds Vance, shielding the children. Luther reclaims the Sword of Corbois and drags Vance away alive, choosing Diem’s mercy over his own vengeance, answering a summons of Diem’s light and shadow.
Back in the suite, Diem realizes Luther never abandoned her; he acted exactly as she would wish. She admits her fear of losing him. Luther reassures her with his phoenix vow and returns her Corbois pendant. He then leads her to a mirror, guiding her to see the hardened, capable queen she has become.
Diem recognizes her evolution—from uncertain claimant to battle-tested leader who can endure and win. She and Luther reconcile, affirming their love and commitment. Diem accepts her role with renewed confidence, inspired to redefine what a Crown can be.
