Morning finds Taran asleep in Diem’s suite. They discuss Zalaric and Taran’s history of abuse, with Diem urging compassion without demanding forgiveness. Luther arrives looking ravaged and sleepless, intent on a difficult confession, but Symond interrupts with a summons from Queen Yrselle.

Symond escorts Diem, pausing to outfit her from Yrselle’s wardrobe and flaunting Centenary mind-reading and rule by power. At lunch, Yrselle orders Diem to don her Crown and then tests her mind; Diem repels the intrusion. Yrselle admits reading Auralie’s thoughts, disdains the Guardians’ occupation only insofar as rituals bored her, and links Diem to the heartstone prophecy while refusing full answers.

On a perilous balcony, Yrselle forces Diem to confront the true costs of change—killing, losing loved ones, even being their cause. Diem, driven by her vision of a unified Emarion, vows to give “everything,” allowing Yrselle brief access to her mind to seal the resolve.

Having measured Diem, Yrselle leads her to a vast library, including a locked Kindred section. She gives Diem the key, framing education as the ultimate weapon. Yrselle has already sent Diem’s companions to be cleaned and clothed, delaying any reunion as Diem stands on the threshold of dangerous knowledge.
