Chapter 36

Overview

At Yrselle’s volatile banquet, Diem resists an attempted flameroot dosing, shields her mind, and realizes the noise plaguing her are others’ thoughts. In a truth-enforced game, Diem declares she’d save everyone, earning Yrselle’s answers: Kindred blood dominates, the Blood War is about bloodlines, and the coming war is inescapable.

Summary

At a crowded Umbros banquet, Yrselle, Symond, and the Centenaries probe Diem’s mortal past while needling Luther. The din overwhelms Diem until Yrselle pointedly demonstrates Umbros mind magic—memory erasure, emotional overwrites, and total psychic annihilation—warning that once a mind is crushed, only death is mercy. The threat doubles as a covert caution aimed at Diem.

Yrselle then serves flameroot to seize their magic. Diem’s panicked mental “Stop” freezes the room; she identifies the drug, forces a swap to gaudenscium, and forges a mental shield that blocks Yrselle’s intrusion. Realizing the hall’s “noise” are others’ thoughts, Diem gains control over the overwhelming chorus.

The party begins a truth-enforced “mirror game.” On rulership, Luther and Alixe favor Diem, Zalaric claims himself, and Diem chooses Luther; Yrselle exposes Alixe’s private doubts about Diem’s readiness. On desire, Luther admits only one woman—Diem—while Taran’s evasions aren’t about Centenaries. On a rescue dilemma, Zalaric chooses himself, Alixe pledges Diem by oath, Taran chooses Diem, and Diem declares she would save them all or die trying, which Yrselle confirms as true.

Honoring Diem’s win, Yrselle explains Kindred blood’s supremacy: Descended traits overrun mortal lines and can be undone only by another Kindred’s blood. She decries Sophos’s breeding schemes, reframes the “Blood War” as a conflict over whose bloodlines prevail, and demonstrates with Diem’s cut palm that blood will decide the coming struggle. Finally, Yrselle accepts that war is unavoidable and that Umbros, and she herself, cannot escape its fate.
