Overview

As the antimatter countdown becomes public spectacle, the Vatican’s crisis grows more chaotic rather than more controlled. The crowds refuse to disperse, the cardinals remain locked in the Sistine Chapel, and Captain Rocher’s suspicious orders shift attention toward the camerlegno’s safety and possible involvement in the next stage of the threat.

The chapter heightens tension by contrasting the camerlegno’s public image as a bold spiritual leader with Rocher’s secretive command to confine and guard him.

Summary

In St. Peter’s Square, Swiss Guards try to force the massive crowd back from the Vatican, but the effort fails because the people are packed too tightly and are more fascinated than frightened. The media screens now show a live feed of the antimatter canister and its countdown, which the camerlegno has provided to the world.

The broadcast does not create panic as intended; the visible canister looks small and harmless to many spectators, and the clock still shows a little under forty-five minutes before detonation. Even so, the Swiss Guards respect Camerlegno Carlo Ventresca’s decision to confront the Illuminati publicly, judging that his transparency has made him a stronger opponent than the secretive Vatican the Illuminati expected.

Inside the Sistine Chapel, Cardinal Mortati grows uneasy as the appointed time passes. Some cardinals continue praying, but others cluster near the exit and pound on the locked door, disturbed that they are still confined.

Outside, Lieutenant Chartrand hears the pounding and contacts Captain Rocher because Rocher’s earlier orders were to keep the cardinals locked in until further notice. Rocher brusquely repeats that the door must remain shut, then orders Chartrand to take men upstairs and guard the Pope’s office because their expected guest is arriving soon and the camerlegno must not be allowed to leave.

Chartrand is confused by the strange command but obeys. Meanwhile, in the Pope’s office, the camerlegno sits in prayerful meditation by the fire, asking God for strength and a miracle while wondering whether he will survive the night.
