Overview
After being rescued from the Demon’s hole, Langdon regains focus and realizes the Chigi Chapel is truly the first altar of science. Vittoria’s discovery that Bernini was the Illuminati’s hidden sculptor reframes the Path of Illumination and gives Langdon a new way forward.
The chapter turns failure into renewed momentum: Bernini’s Habakkuk and the Angel becomes the first marker, and the poem tells Langdon to follow the angel’s pointing hand toward the next murder site.
Summary
Langdon, nearly overcome by fumes in the Demon’s hole, climbs toward the chapel floor after discovering the branded cardinal. As Langdon weakens and slips near the top, two Swiss Guards seize Langdon under the arms and pull Langdon out of the pit into the Chigi Chapel.
The chapel is crowded with Swiss Guards, fresh air now entering through the torn plastic curtain. Olivetti angrily blames Vittoria for not identifying the correct location sooner, then orders the body removed and the building searched. Vittoria checks Langdon’s condition and reminds Langdon that they still have forty minutes before the next murder, pushing Langdon to recover and find the next marker.
Langdon initially insists the Path of Illumination is lost because the original sculptures are gone, but then realizes the Chigi Chapel itself is the first altar of science. Its pyramids, stars, planets, ellipses, and earthly symbolism make it a more fitting Illuminati site than the Pantheon. This gives Langdon hope that a marker may still point them to the next altar and to another chance at catching the killer.
Vittoria reveals that the unknown Illuminati sculptor was Gianlorenzo Bernini. Langdon resists the idea because Bernini was a famous Catholic artist favored by the Vatican, not an obscure rebel. Vittoria argues that Bernini’s position made him the perfect infiltrator and that the Illuminati may have concealed Bernini’s identity even from most members; a chapel plaque confirming that all interior adornments are Bernini’s forces Langdon to accept the possibility.
Langdon and Vittoria then notice a white marble sculpture partly hidden near the wall: Bernini’s Habakkuk and the Angel. Langdon identifies Habakkuk as the prophet associated with the annihilation of the earth and becomes certain this sculpture is the first Illuminati marker. Although the prophet and the angel point in opposite directions, Langdon realizes from the poem’s line about angels guiding the quest that they must follow the angel’s direction, so Langdon rushes outside to determine where the angel points.
