Summary
As the Vatican helicopter flies low over Rome, Langdon looks down on the city’s tangled roads, traffic, monuments, and ruins. The view prompts reflections on Rome’s long history, including the violence once staged in the Coliseum and the remnants of the Roman Forum.
The helicopter heads north and west over the Tiber toward Vatican City. St. Peter’s Basilica emerges from the haze, and Langdon is struck by its immense scale, Michelangelo’s dome, the vast piazza, and the historical weight of St. Peter’s burial beneath the basilica.
Vittoria notices a cluster of media trucks and satellite dishes in St. Peter’s Square and becomes alarmed, wondering whether news of the antimatter threat has leaked. The pilot explains that the press is there for Il Conclavo, the Vatican Conclave, which is about to be sealed.
Langdon realizes the significance of the timing: fifteen days after the Pope’s sudden death, the world’s cardinals have gathered in Vatican City to elect the next Pope.
