Overview

Langdon and Vittoria arrive over Rome and approach Vatican City, where the grandeur of St. Peter’s contrasts with the danger hidden beneath the moment. They discover that the media presence is not about the antimatter but about the imminent papal conclave.

The revelation that all 165 cardinals are gathered inside Vatican City turns the antimatter crisis into a potential catastrophe for the entire Catholic Church’s leadership.

Summary

As the Vatican helicopter flies low over Rome, Langdon looks down on the city’s tangled roads, traffic, monuments, and ruins. The view prompts reflections on Rome’s long history, including the violence once staged in the Coliseum and the remnants of the Roman Forum.

The helicopter heads north and west over the Tiber toward Vatican City. St. Peter’s Basilica emerges from the haze, and Langdon is struck by its immense scale, Michelangelo’s dome, the vast piazza, and the historical weight of St. Peter’s burial beneath the basilica.

Vittoria notices a cluster of media trucks and satellite dishes in St. Peter’s Square and becomes alarmed, wondering whether news of the antimatter threat has leaked. The pilot explains that the press is there for Il Conclavo, the Vatican Conclave, which is about to be sealed.

Langdon realizes the significance of the timing: fifteen days after the Pope’s sudden death, the world’s cardinals have gathered in Vatican City to elect the next Pope. This revelation sharply raises the stakes, because the stolen antimatter canister is hidden somewhere in the Vatican while the entire leadership of the Roman Catholic Church is assembled there.
