Overview

Langdon survives the Hassassin’s attack inside the Fire church by hiding under a sarcophagus and using it as a trap. Vittoria is revealed to be alive but helpless nearby, and Langdon cannot save her.

The chapter shifts the immediate danger from pursuit to entrapment: Langdon is alive but sealed in darkness, while Vittoria’s fate becomes the next ominous threat.

Summary

Langdon crawls beneath the pews of the burning church, driven by reflex rather than a plan. Trying to reach the main aisle, he misjudges the distance and emerges exposed near Bernini’s Ecstasy of St. Teresa, the sculpture that marked the Fire altar.

The Hassassin fires, forcing Langdon to sprint and dive across the front of the church. Langdon sees Vittoria crumpled near the back and senses she may still be alive, but the killer’s pursuit leaves Langdon no chance to reach her.

Langdon rolls into a side niche and hides behind a raised marble sarcophagus. When the Hassassin fires beneath it, Langdon narrowly avoids being shot by lifting his body off the floor until the gun’s chamber clicks empty.

The Hassassin then overturns the sarcophagus to crush or expose Langdon. The coffin collapses around Langdon, spilling the decayed remains of its occupant onto him, but the fall leaves a narrow gap that keeps Langdon alive.

The Hassassin reaches under the overturned coffin and grips Langdon’s throat. With one arm trapped, Langdon uses his legs to shove the sarcophagus off its supports, causing the rim to slam down on the killer’s arm and forcing him to release Langdon. Langdon is left sealed in darkness among the bones, thinking of Vittoria, while the narration warns that she is about to awaken to a worse horror.
