Overview

Langdon and Vittoria arrive inside Vatican City and are rushed through its unusually deserted grounds toward Swiss Guard headquarters. The emptiness underscores the secrecy of conclave and raises the stakes: the antimatter is hidden somewhere inside a sealed, security-sensitive city.

The chapter shifts the investigation from CERN and transit into the Vatican’s inner operations. Their arrival at a chaotic command area suggests the crisis is already straining Vatican security.

Summary

Langdon and Vittoria land at the Vatican helipad in the northwest corner of Vatican City. Vittoria immediately shows single-minded urgency, focused on finding the stolen antimatter before its battery fails and it detonates.

A Swiss Guard pilot escorts them into an electric cart and drives them along the fortified Vatican wall, where guards stand posted at regular intervals. As they pass signs, Radio Vaticana, the Vatican Gardens, the rear of St. Peter’s Basilica, the papal residence, administrative buildings, and the Vatican Museum, Langdon registers the scale and hidden complexity of the city.

Vittoria notices the Vatican grounds are deserted. The guard explains that the cardinals are already gathered in the Sistine Chapel for the pre-conclave period of reflection and that all other residents and staff have been expelled for secrecy and security until the conclave ends.

The cart stops behind St. Peter’s Basilica, and the pilot leads Langdon and Vittoria through plazas and Vatican service buildings toward the Office of the Swiss Guard. At the entrance, guards object to Vittoria’s shorts, but the pilot overrides them by saying the commander wants to see Langdon and Vittoria immediately.

Inside, Langdon observes the office’s unexpectedly ornate halls and a stairway lined with nude male statues covered by mismatched fig leaves, prompting his reflection on the Vatican’s historical mutilation of Renaissance sculpture. At the bottom, the pilot opens a coded steel door, and Langdon and Vittoria enter a space filled with chaos.
