Overview

Langdon descends into the crypt beneath the Chigi Chapel and discovers that the naked figure is a murdered cardinal buried upright in the earth. The killer has suffocated him with dirt and branded his chest with the Illuminati ambigram for Earth, confirming the first elemental murder.

The discovery proves that the threat against the cardinals is real and already underway, raising the urgency of the hunt because three more elemental killings are still to come.

Summary

Langdon descends slowly into the demon’s hole beneath the Chigi Chapel while Vittoria remains above, holding the blowtorch to light the way. The ladder is unstable, the air smells of rot and dampness, and Langdon grows increasingly uneasy as he wonders where Olivetti is.

Partway down, Langdon slips on decay and nearly falls. He then passes burial niches packed with skulls and skeletons, confirming that the space below the chapel is a crypt and intensifying the sense that the Illuminati trail has led them into a literal tomb.

At the bottom, Langdon enters a circular chamber and approaches the motionless naked figure. The body appears to be standing, but Langdon realizes the man has been buried upright to the waist, hands tied behind his back with a red cardinal’s sash, head arched back as if pleading upward.

Vittoria asks whether the man is dead, and Langdon confirms that the victim suffocated because his mouth was packed with dirt. Vittoria’s question connects the method of murder to the first promised element: Earth.

Langdon circles the corpse and sees a fresh, burned Illuminati ambigram branded into the cardinal’s chest: Earth. The discovery confirms that the assassin has begun carrying out the elemental murders, and Langdon is horrified to realize that three cardinals remain to be killed.
