Overview
After the second public murder, Langdon briefly retreats into the Pope’s private bathroom, overwhelmed by exhaustion, horror, and the continuing pattern of Illuminati ambigrams. Outside, Vatican leaders remain stalled in the antimatter search, which increases the danger that the canister may be hidden deeper inside the Vatican than they had feared.
Summary
Robert Langdon enters the private bathroom adjoining the Office of the Pope after witnessing Cardinal Lamassé die in St. Peter’s Square. Langdon cleans blood from his face and lips, recognizing that the blood is Lamassé’s and that the Hassassin has now fulfilled another part of the Illuminati threat.
In the mirror, Langdon sees his exhaustion and trauma. The Air brand remains fixed in his mind, joining the previous ambigrams he has seen that day, and Langdon understands that more killings are still expected if the pattern continues.
Outside the bathroom, Langdon hears Commander Olivetti, the camerlegno, and Captain Rocher debating their next move. The antimatter search has still found nothing, raising the possibility that the canister is either hidden where the Swiss Guard missed it or that the intruder penetrated deeper into Vatican City than Olivetti believed possible.
Alone, Langdon struggles to think clearly under hunger, sleeplessness, and shock. A sudden absurd realization that he has used the Pope’s toilet briefly breaks the tension, and Langdon chuckles at the thought of the “Holy Throne.”
