Overview
Kohler receives an urgent call after returning to CERN’s atrium and learns that the stolen antimatter has surfaced in Rome. His failing health prevents a full explanation, but he directs Langdon and Vittoria to go while identifying the caller as connected to “the Swiss.”
Langdon realizes this means the Swiss Guard of Vatican City, transforming the investigation from a CERN murder and theft into a direct threat against the Vatican. The revelation confirms the scale of the danger and forces Langdon into active belief in the unfolding Illuminati crisis.
Summary
As Langdon, Vittoria, and Maximilian Kohler emerge into CERN’s main atrium, Kohler’s devices all begin alerting him at once because he is back in communication range. A public announcement summons Kohler to call his office, and the shared alarm briefly overrides the tension among the three.
Kohler calls in and learns that an urgent caller has information tied to the stolen antimatter. He refuses to discuss the matter by phone and arranges to meet at Leonardo da Vinci Airport in forty minutes, ordering that the canister be located immediately before his severe coughing overwhelms him.
Vittoria pages CERN’s infirmary as Kohler’s condition worsens. Langdon, hearing the airport named, connects the Illuminati brand, Leonardo Vetra’s murder, the antimatter theft, and the likely destination. The scattered evidence becomes real to Langdon, and he accepts that the threat is no longer theoretical.
Paramedics arrive and give Kohler oxygen. Kohler manages to tell Vittoria and Langdon that the antimatter is in Rome and identifies the caller only as “the Swiss” before losing the ability to explain further.
As the paramedics take Kohler away, he grips Langdon and urges him to go and call him. Vittoria asks what “the Swiss” means, and Langdon explains that Kohler must mean the Swiss Guard, the protectors of Vatican City, revealing that the crisis now points directly to Rome and the Vatican.
