Overview

BBC reporter Gunther Glick and videographer Chinita Macri follow a mysterious tip toward Piazza del Popolo, where the caller claims proof of a cardinal’s murder can be found. Their skepticism gives way to urgency when four identical, crowded cars race past them toward the same destination.

The chapter shifts outside Langdon and Vittoria’s investigation, showing that the unfolding crisis is drawing media attention and possibly other unknown parties to the first Illuminati site.

Summary

Chinita Macri sits in the passenger seat of the BBC van on Via Tomacelli, frustrated that Gunther Glick has dragged them away from St. Peter’s based on another call from his mystery source. The caller has directed Glick to Piazza del Popolo, claiming there is a church there containing proof that a cardinal has been murdered.

Macri doubts the tip and argues they should return to cover the conclave, which began an hour earlier. Glick remains focused on the map, convinced they should keep following the lead despite the risk of missing a major Vatican announcement.

As Glick starts to pull into an intersection, Macri spots danger and shouts a warning. Glick brakes just in time as four identical Alfa Romeos, each apparently packed with passengers, speed past and turn onto the same route Glick planned to take.

Macri dismisses the incident as reckless driving, but Glick notices the coordinated nature of the cars and becomes excited. Believing the convoy may be connected to the church and the caller’s tip, Glick accelerates after them, concluding that he and Macri are not the only ones heading to church.
