Overview
Gunther Glick receives an anonymous tip that four kidnapped cardinals will be murdered across Rome, with the caller promising to reveal the first location just before eight. Though Chinita Macri doubts the story, Glick believes the source sounds disturbingly credible.
The chapter shifts the Illuminati plot into the media sphere, showing that the killer or conspirators intend to use live news coverage to amplify fear and spectacle. Glick's database search hints that the caller's claims connect to a dangerous group or keyword Macri recognizes with alarm.
Summary
BBC reporter Gunther Glick ends a mysterious phone call and tells Chinita Macri that he has received a tip about something happening inside the Vatican beyond the conclave. The caller claimed that four cardinals have been kidnapped and will be murdered at different churches that night.
Macri reacts with skepticism, assuming Glick is being tricked or hazed. Glick, however, believes the caller sounded neither irrational nor dishonest, drawing on his experience dealing with dubious sources from his time at the British Tattler.
Glick recalls that the anonymous man, who had a cold and distinctly Middle Eastern accent, promised to call just before eight with the exact location of the first killing. The caller also emphasized that Glick's footage could make him famous and described the media as "the right arm of anarchy."
Driven by adrenaline and the possibility of a major story, Glick asks Macri to access the BBC database and search a keyword tied to the caller's claim. Macri reluctantly complies, but when Glick gives the keyword, Macri is shocked, suggesting the term confirms the call is alarming rather than ordinary.
